What is the back office?

In most large corporations and enterprises, there is an entire workforce dedicated to keep the corporation afloat.  Right from administration and logistics, to IT and processing, back office jobs cut across all skillsets and sectors. Essentially, the term back office is used to describe those job types that are not directly involved in revenue generation but form major mechanisms to help deliver the products and services to generate revenue. Needless to say that the back office is an integral part in the success of a company and back office employees are the most indispensable.

What are back office jobs?

The back office in an investment bank might encompass departments like I.T., operations, HR, accounting, and compliance. They perform functions that mostly focus on processing or support. In sales, the back office typically plays a key role internally, providing support to the sales force for administrative duties such as legal, finance, marketing, order management, operations support, as well as customer facing roles typically positioned to include functions that support customer order fulfilment and duties involved with readying customer-support call centres.

Quite understandably, the various back office positions vary from company to company. Other back office jobs include process servers, logistics support, data compilers, corporate treasurers, accounts managers, etc.

What skill does one need for back office jobs?

To work in the back office of a large multinational, one does not need to have accomplished high levels of education. For most back office jobs, the basic requirement is a basic degree in the concerned discipline and proved excellence.

Is there money in a back office job?

Of course, there is money in back office jobs. With adequate experience and good performance, one can easily go up the ladder and command a very handsome salary. For example, corporate treasurers with a great amount of experience can earn up to 2 lacs per month. One may also get transferred to the ‘middle’ and ‘front’ offices if their efforts are consistent and sincere.
