The Importance of English in Getting a Job

Whether it is for a conversation at the workplace or to impress new clients, a good command over English is paramount in today’s world. Irrespective of the post you are applying for, an applicant with polished English always has an edge over the others.


It is the international language

Not decreasing the importance of any other language but business now is ubiquitously conducted in English. From a new start up to the oldest of conglomerates, English is the language of business. In a country with an average literacy rate of 74% and 1.2 billion people, there’s a huge competition for any position that you may think of applying. Even if you are the best-dressed candidate in the lot, it will take a lot to stand out in front of your prospective employer. If you are fluent in English, your employer knows that you have worked over polishing your tongue and thus have the confidence and determination required for the job. A language is like a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it will get.

It will take you to greater heights

More than getting a job, often applicants are worried about growth. Does this career track offer me growth? Will I be promoted from amongst the ranks? Or will I remain at the same post for the rest of my life? An important decider in your chances of promotion is your personality. An important part of that is communication and your polished English will take you places in that department. Clients automatically perceive you to be smarter and politer because of the general perception of English. Happy client equals happy bosses. Happy boss equals better chances at promotion which equals to a happy you.

It is not that difficult

Learning to be fluent in a language just takes one thing- Practice and not money. Lots of practice. Just knowing the words by going to a class is not enough, you need to able to speak them in a meaningful manner. Read as much as you can. Listen to conversational English from authentic sources like the BBC debates. Whenever you are traveling or have a few minutes to kill, put on your headphones and listen to something. Start conversing with your friends in English. Make it a habit to wish those around in English which gives you an idea of starting a conversation with a random stranger.
